Could anything be hotter than Las Vegas, Nevada in JULY?  If my memory serves me correctly, there is one just one thing: Las Vegas in August!  I walked outside today and it was 110* but that’s okay, because the wind was only blowing about 15 MPH! I guess this is how a chicken in a convection oven must feel!  Hope you are staying cool this summer, either in sweet A/C or sitting poolside whenever possible.

I have a very exciting article for you this month, so I’ll keep my introduction brief. If you or your clients are looking at reaching or exceeding lofty goals for 2007, now is the time to prepare. Discover A Sales Technique That is SO EFFECTIVE,
It’s Illegal in All 50 States!

What is the one business and sales technique that is so effective that it is illegal in all 50 states?

Can you imagine any one sales technique that is perceived to be so persuasive and so powerful that the government has forbidden its employees from engaging in it?  If you guessed the “Business Lunch,” you’re right!  Most government employees are not allowed to enjoy business lunches with vendors (unless they pay their own way, and even then, there are still some restrictions!) And there are many other companies that are following suit. I discovered this as audience members would occasionally ask me how to socialize with their clients who were not “allowed to” go to lunch with them.

WHY would a company (or the government) prohibit their employees from enjoying a business lunch at the expense of their vendors? Because taking a client to lunch is one of the most effective means of building a stronger, more significant business relationship …and people prefer to do business with people they like. Big businesses and government agencies alike know the value of a lunch done right and fear the bias that could result if business relationships became friendships.

If you are ABLE to take your clients to lunch and choose instead to eat alone or with friends, you are turning your back on a way to do business that is so valuable it is, in fact, illegal in all 50 states!

One final note: When you take your clients out to lunch (or breakfast, dinner or even drinks), make sure that you do things the right way. It is not the same thing as socializing with friends, and there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Rudy Giuliani said, “The key to success is relentless preparation.”  Make sure you are prepared before you ask your clients to join you socially. I had the pleasure of speaking to 200 students at the University of California, San Diego last month.
